Good Friendships

E-mail Print PDF

During the half-term holiday I was with two friends at lunch-time in a local restaurant. Sitting in the foyer waiting to be seated were two people I recognised, the parents of a former member of our club, Tina Winkler.

Tina played for the club until her twenties. Her parents told me that she is now married, has three children and lives in Yorkshire BUT that she still keeps in contact with two of her former club-mates.

After lunch I attended the very successful holiday coaching course that Andy, Dot and Roald organised for those new to the League. At this I overheard two of our youngsters, who do not live in the same village nor attend the same school but who play in the same team, arranging to meet for tea. It reminded me of Tina and her life-long friends. Our club is not all about the competitions we enter and enjoy, it is also about making good friendships which could last for life and I am just as thrilled when I hear of these as when I learn of the exploits of members on the table.

Our last tournament was held in the half-term week and Hugh and I were very worried a few days before the event that the entry was low. I therefore sent an e-mail urging members to make an effort and attend. Daniel Shaw had been away during half-term but saw the e-mail upon his return. He and his Mum rushed down on the Saturday morning to enlist Dan’s support. What a great member!! We really valued your efforts, Dan.

The entry did pick up and Cherry thinks we made about £100 and, just as importantly, provided good competition for our visitors. There were many good performances (16 trophy winners) from our players and I hope you visit the results on our web-site.

Last month we took 3 teams to the National Cadet League in Wellingborough. Our A team of Timmy Cooper, Lee Dorning and Tom Meldrum won the B division convincingly and will be competing in the A division next time, the first time we have done so. Congratulations to them all.

Phil
